Her other interests include teaching herself piano, violin, knitting, cooking, baking, making candles, and gardening. She’d really like to get into creating art from sandblasting old windows, and is always working to improve her French.
Q: For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or traditional paper/hard back books?
A: Physical books hands down. One of the main benefits I find in reading is being able to bring a book anywhere. I don’t need a plug, an internet connection, a software update. I can read in the rain, I can read with glare, I can read in a silo full of magnets. I’ve no hatred for new technology—most of my job revolves around loving technology—but reading is where I go when I want to get away from a screen. Besides, how would I fulfill my dream of lining a room with bookshelves without the physical books?
Q: Do you read much and if so who are your favourite authors.
Q: Do you read much and if so who are your favourite authors.
A: Reading is necessary to writing, and I read about a book a week. My personal library is up to just over four hundred books total, mostly fantasy. My number one favourite author will always be Scott Lynch with his Gentlemen Bastard series, but I also have a special place in my heart for the Queen of the Tearling, the Riyria Revelations, Tigana, The Book Thief, Shōgun, and The Alchemist.
Q: How are you publishing this book and why?
A: I aim to publish traditionally because I hold deeply to the dream of having my book in bookstores across the country. It’s an extension of my preference to paper books over digital. I want to have an agent to share a career-long partnership, to discuss my writing with and sort through problems both literary and legal.
Q: How much research do you do?
A: Actually not that much. Being based in a fantasy world, I’ve managed to keep most of my story to the confines of my imagination and subjects I already know thoroughly from real-life experience. I do, however, occasionally find myself googling the fatality of a wound, swears common in the mid 1900’s, torture devices...
Q: Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?
Q: Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?
A: My main character is slightly mad, increasingly so as the chapters progress. She’s morbid, volatile, and impossibly stubborn. She treats children as adults, adults as children, and all lives as pebbles on a scale. Her main goal is uncovering the cause of the night elves’ extinction; she obsesses about it, risks her life for it. But when she finds the island in which they all died, she realizes that their curse may not be over, and that she is one of its prey.
